Test Strategies – Speaking

Here are some helpful hints for the IELTS speaking test.

1. Find a friend or teacher to practice speaking with. It is not enough to think of answers in your head. You must practice speaking aloud, using your voice. Talk to yourself in the mirror if you don’t have a friend to help you….

2. You will be asked about you! Practice talking about your family, your school, your hobbies, your town, your goals, your home, your studies. It is fine to write down your answers. But don’t memorize them and then say them like a robot. Practice answering the questions until you can do it in a natural and relaxed way.

3. When you are in the test, if  you say something you know is incorrect, it’s okay. Just correct yourself. Say it again, correctly.

4. There will be time to plan your answer for part 2 of the speaking test. Use this time wisely. Make notes. Organize your thoughts.

5. Remember to breathe. It’s easy for us to hold our breath when we’re under pressure. Breathing helps us think more clearly and releases anxiety.

6. Smile. Be yourself. The examiner is a person who sees student after student after student. The examiner is a human being. Connect. Imagine you are having a conversation with this person about the topic.

7. I know, it is difficult to be relaxed in the speaking test….practice is the key.
