Creating a study plan 1

Posted on: June 9, 2010

When you decide to take the IELTS test it is important to create your own study plan.

If you have an IELTS tutor, work with the tutor to create a plan. If you are studying on your own, think about including the following in your plan:

1. Go to the official IELTS website, http://www.ielts.org, to learn about the test.

2. Schedule time each day, 5 days a week, for study.

3. Schedule time for study of each of the skills: reading, listening, speaking, writing. Spend more time on your weaker skills.

4. Research online for websites and materials that will help you with each skill. There are many to choose from.

5. Understand that doing well on the IELTS test is partly about what you know and partly about the strategy or how you take the test.

6. Study according to your learning style (see the post on “how we learn”). If you are visual, make mind maps.

If you are kinesthetic, take frequent breaks when you study.

Some students learn better when they write out or rewite notes.

Use color to organize notes; highlight or use colored pens.

Auditory learners do better when they read what they’re studying out loud.

Study in the ways that work best for you.

And…return to this blog for more about strategy and online resources for the four skills. The next few posts will cover these topics.
